Multi-instrumentalist Sam Rivers began composing his kaleidoscopic works for big band in the late '50s in Boston, where Herb Pomeroy and Jaki Byard became his mentors. Rivers' admiration for Duke Ellington has also influenced his style of composition, inspring him to leave room in his works for individual musicians to express themselves.
